Australia Tour August 2012

Free Download Magnetic Island Jam Play Along MP3 & PDF

"Magnetic Island Jam"  I wrote this composition to be a high energy opening tune.
Written in a good range for trumpets to warm up their lips, and with simple chords
for band members to solo on a bit to loosen up the chops.

It was with anticipation of, and especially for our "Lost My Heart" tour featuring Bill Watrous and Ingrid James.  It was unfortunate, due to limited rehearsal time we had with Aussie musicians joining us for the tour, that we did not get to play the chart.  Wanting to hear the arrangement, I produced the song  in my home studio.  I left this as a play along version without a solo.

Additional Grooves and Songs prepared for the Clinics are available below:

Each of these play along tracks begins on a concert Cm7, except the  dom_pedal.mp3 which is C7, moving then through the cycle of 4ths.   Designed to improve your ear, and thereby, your listening skills, you can practice scales, riifs or melodies with each track.  Vary the scale patterns and arpeggios on all the exersizes. ie: 3rds, triads, seventh chords, etc.  Remember to  reverse directions. Play around with, where you like the sound of chromatic passing notes etc.....  Enjoy the sound of sustained notes against the tonal background and develop an awareness of the tonal colors, disonance, consonance etc.  Experiment with chord tones, scales and upper structure notes like the 9th, 11th,  #11 and 13th.

Practice listening to the rhythm section parts and allow yourself to be influenced by rhythms of the comping patterns, bass lines and drum beats.  Play riffs based on motifs and develop them with variations on the theme. Try to play inside the rhythm groove rather than just playing over the top of it.

I have heard it stated eloquently:  "Think of your solo as accompaniment to the drummer".  Have fun and enjoy.
